The Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC570 22Tb hard drive is especially dedicated to professionals for use in data centres. Indeed, this 3.5" hard drive for companies has many advantages for server use such as its OptiNAND technology, a load of 550 TB/year and an MTBF of 2.5 million hours.
Offered in capacities from 10TB, the DC HC500 series can be used for enterprise servers, backup systems, cloud and enterprise NAS that require a sector size of 512e for high performance and high density storage with HelioSeal technology.
OptiNAND technology integrates an iNAND Universal Flash Storage (UFS) embedded flash drive (EFD) and a traditional spinning disk carrier. It also includes innovative modifications to the firmware algorithm and system-on-chip (SoC). OptiNAND is not a hybrid technology. The drive works smarter, thanks to improved firmware algorithms that take advantage of the extended metadata that has been transferred to iNAND. As a result, the number of tracks per inch (TPI) and thus the areal density can be increased.

Received quickly as usual. Recognised by my LDLC and Inovu USB docks. Fast: 182MB/sec on average, with peaks of 210MB/sec, but my PC is not very young (Core i7 4790K). Quieter than the 20, 18 and 12TB versions, which were already quiet, you can sometimes hear it scratching a bit but it's very slight. As far as durability is concerned, this is my 4th ultra star in 2 years, one of which works 16/24h 7/7d and it's fine. 20TB available once formatted.
22TB is just gigantic. I recommend that you partition this hard drive into 3 partitions and dedicate each partition to a specific task (photos, films, etc.).
A 22TB disk that is 20.01TB after the byte binary conversion, it has 10 disks of 2.2TB in a 3.5" box, it is impressive!
I'm not sure if it's a good idea to use a CMR (ePMR) drive, but my old synology NAS with the MAJ gives me a red "disk not supported" message when I try to initialize it... I'm not sure if this is a good idea, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to use it as a backup drive.
I use it as a backup drive via my PC with power management and when I'm not using it at all, I can disconnect it and turn it off via a USB3/SATA rackmount bare drive enclosure.
Conclusion:
- Largest drive in SATA storage for this 2023 quarter,
- A bit noisy like all drives with many platters,
- In my case, clearly not compatible with my SYNO NAS and the DSM version used.
Thanks LDLC, always so fast!
