The Designed by GG Ironclad v3 is a top-of-the-range keyboard offering enhanced typing comfort. Its gasket mount structure and original lubricated mechanical switches provide a silent, resonance-free typing experience. It features hot-swappable switches to extend the life of the keyboard, as well as Open Source firmware that lets users make the hardware their own.
Ironclad v3 offers simple, high-performance original firmware. With an intuitive driver, you can customise keyboard backlighting, reassign keys and create macros with ease. It's the ideal solution for novice users looking for a simple, functional keyboard. For power users, the keyboard is compatible with the Open Source QMK firmware (Fork SonixQMK). This makes it possible to create advanced shortcuts on several layers, modify the functions of the scroll wheel, and generally have total control over the keyboard.
Finally, for gamers looking for speed, there's a third firmware optimised for celerity. By sacrificing the RGB lighting and reassigning the hardware clock to the matrix scan, you get a scanning frequency of 6,000 Hz, so that keystrokes can be detected in milliseconds, every millisecond (the USB frequency remains at 1,000Hz, so this feature simply ensures that keystrokes are detected in milliseconds). Freely interchangeable, the firmware installation is completely reversible. If you install faulty firmware, you can use a button to force the keyboard to restart in bootloader mode and reinstall stable firmware.
The factory-lubricated switches provide a smooth, silent keystroke and eliminate resonance. The stabilisers are lubricated with PFPE-based grease and do not reflect metallic echoes. The noisy scraping of the space bar will be a memory of another era. The keys are made from PBT, giving you extra resistance to abrasion. Unlike ABS keys, PBT is chemically inert when it comes into contact with the skin and doesn't take on a greasy texture after prolonged use.
What's more, the lettering on the keys is thermoformed, so they're not just etched in surface paint. They are formed by a plastic structure running through the entire shell. This method ensures that the lettering will last over time.
Brown Raccoon switches are inspired by the famous Holy Panda. They offer a tactile detent immediately after the start of the stroke, followed by a smooth glide and a clean rebound.
If you like Browns, you'll love Raccoons.

Very good keyboard and LDLC sent it on time. I recommend this keyboard. I am happy with my purchase.
I'd never had a mechanical keyboard before and I have to say that with the Brown Raccoon Switches, you can feel the keys being activated very clearly: even if you're not looking for the ultimate performance, there's a real difference in terms of precision and responsiveness.
The keyboard is visually quite plain in black, but really heavy (1.6 kg!).
In terms of noise, it's noisier than my Corsair membrane keyboard. The good news is that you can always add silicone rings if you want to make it quieter.
The software supplied is fairly basic, but it allows you to do the basics, play with the lighting and configure macros fairly easily.
As far as durability and customisation are concerned, I think this model is really built to last, while allowing for a fair amount of fantasy (replacing switches, changing the stroke of the keyboard, attenuating noise, replacing keys). Changing a switch is very simple and I've already replaced a key with the supplied pliers to test the Red Blood, even though I'm very happy with the Brown Raccoon.
I bought both versions of this keyboard (brown and red).
Opinion given after a week's use:
- exudes quality ;
- sober ;
- the brown version retains the characteristic sound while being quieter than other brands;
- the side dial for sound is practical, as is the universal USB-C connection;
- durable product thanks to standard keycaps.
I'm simply withdrawing one star for the brown version because it seems to me that designed by gg doesn't sell replacement Racoon brown switches, whereas the keyboard is generally in line with this approach (robustness of the product, modifiable key cap, interchangeable switches).
The configuration software is simple and very light. A profile selection option depending on the application being used would be a real plus.
It was a real pleasure to buy this French-designed product.
I find this keyboard extremely pleasant to type on, much better than other major brand mechanical keyboards. the pre-lubricated keys make all the difference (in sound and feel).
customising the keys is super simple. the keyboard is heavy and stable. i use it at work, so its sober design is perfect for me.
In decades, I've never had a keyboard of such quality and such solidity.
And I've had keyboards from almost every brand.
You have to go back to the 80s and 90s to find equivalent assembly qualities (keytronic or ibm).
The keys don't skip, they fit together really well (not like the Corsairs), the plastics look really solid (not like the Razers) and the lettering won't fade after a while.
The software is still in beta at the moment, but it's super light and does all the essentials. And you don't have to keep it open all the time for it to work.
I haven't tested macros because that's not my main use for it.
On the other hand, the keyboard is very heavy, heavier than a Corsair MK70.2 which already has an aluminium base in comparison.
The only downside I found, but it's easily compensated for, is that the space bar makes a lot of noise when you type.
I put 2 O-rings that I had left over from the Corsair on each of the 3 key positions and that was enough to reduce the noise.
I'm not sorry about the price, which is much cheaper than some of the lower quality, more blinged-out models.
The keyboard comes with 2 switches (red+brown) for replacement or to compare keystrokes.
The key extraction clip is more or less practical depending on the keys, but it's made of metal so it won't break.
Don't hesitate to pull to get the keys out, the adjustment play with the switches is rather tight, but that's for the best.
The detachable braided cord is plugged in near the left side, not in the middle of the keyboard, which is also practical.
Well done to the designer Christophe and thanks to the LDLC team for allowing me to test a V2 model before this purchase.
