I think the Fox Spirit monitor is simply perfect! Especially for gaming personally. The image is fluid, with beautiful colours, and there's no latency. Even though it's a bit expensive, it's worth the money. The quality is there, and it's a very good investment.
Avoid!
Deplorable screen quality. The backlight pattern leaves clearly visible horizontal grey lines on light colours, making the image completely streaky. It ruins games and videos. I'll leave you a photo of what it looks like on the LDLC website. If you use this screen at a normal desk distance (around 40cm) you will see this effect. Don't buy if this is your case, there are much better screens for a bit more money. As others have said, the pixels also seem very fragile. Poor quality product that has no place on a trusted site like LDLC.
The disadvantages of this monitor are
- it emits a slight crackling noise when it is switched on.
- it is sensitive to changes in voltage, for example when a switch is turned on and then off nearby, the screen often goes out briefly before coming back on again (problem with the screen or the electrical circuit in the room? Probably both).
- fragile pixels (but not visible on 4K except with a black background and maximum brightness): I exchanged it once hoping that the previous problems were unique to my monitor but the new one has the same problems with dead pixels (= all the time lit in one colour) as well.
- the sound quality of the built-in speakers is very poor.
- LED lighting at the back of the screen much weaker in real life than on the picture (but I had planned to turn it off anyway).
The advantages are :
- a 4K monitor
- varied connectivity: HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, USB-C with charging at the same time as image sharing
- 144 Hz: untested
- 28": good size
- vesa 100x100 compatible.
Incidentally, I bought the Fox Spirit 28" LED monitor - PGK280 on Black Friday at a price of £499.96 with a 15% discount, but the next day a further £100 reduction was offered and now the original price has dropped by £50. This spoiled my impression of having made a good deal.
Conclusion:
I really like the 4K and the USB-C charging, which means I only need one cable to plug in my laptop and charge it, but I can't recommend this screen for the drawbacks mentioned above (although it's possible that the problem with the screen turning off is unique to me). And if you only want one cable to plug in, get a hub instead, so you'll be freer to choose your screen.
Plus points:
- The screen is rather pretty; the 4K resolution on a 28" offers a very high and pleasing PPI, close to what we would look for on Apple-type screens.
- The screen border is very thin, black, and is a direct part of the screen. It's not made of plastic, which makes it even less noticeable.
- It comes with several cables, including the USB-C to USB-C cable that enables 120 Hz in 4K (which I was able to experience with my Mac mini 2020, so USB-C Thunderbolt 3).
- The LEDs behind the screen are very inconspicuous (useless really, they don't light up at all), but there's an option to turn them off, so that's fine.
Minuses (really minimal for a screen of this price):
-Colour adjustment is quite complicated. I'm convinced that you can get a very good rendition, but you need to spend some time on it or use a calibration probe.
- The thin border prevents the use of a Xiaomi-style lightbar; it presses against the screen and creates white light leaks, which will damage the screen in the short term.
- HDR: Yes, it's dynamic, but the colour rendition isn't very faithful. It's very difficult to adjust, so I didn't activate it. After that, I don't know enough about the subject to judge.
The screen is great for gaming but its flaw is the pixels which are sensitive. I had to get angry with LDLC to get it changed once. It was in the middle but there is a legal amount of dead pixels allowed before a change.
My screen was changed and 2 months later I have another pixel that has jumped to the side of the screen this time so it's less annoying.
The screen is very good though, clean and simple in style. It is adjustable and can be lit up, which I really like.
I don't know if I can recommend this screen, I don't know if it's bad luck or if the pixels are really fragile.
