Overview

For very long term archiving

Verbatim 's MDISC has become the new standard for digital storage, designed to preserve and protect your files by burning your data onto a patented "rock-hard" layer that is resistant to light, temperature and humidity. Tests that comply with industry standards ISO/IEC 10995 have been conducted by Millenniata. They showed that the average expected life of an MDISC was 1332 years, with only 5% of the disks showing signs of data loss after 667 years. Therefore, the expected lifetime should be several hundred years. The 100GB capacity of the BD-XL discs facilitates the archiving of essential data for home users as well as for businesses. The MDISC BD-XL discs contain titanium for increased longevity. Combined with MDISC's patented "as hard as a rock" recording layer, these discs offer you the best protection for all your valuable data. A BD-XL Blu-ray writer is required to burn the data onto the discs.

The advent of Blu-ray technology has led to the introduction of high capacity storage discs to meet the demand created by the rapid growth of high definition television (HDTV). Blu-ray discs take their name from the blue laser technology. The blue colour is due to the shorter wavelength of the laser. The blue laser uses a wavelength of 405 nm, while the red laser technology for DVDs uses a wavelength of 650 nm. Using a blue laser with a shorter wavelength allows smaller data pits to be written and thus greatly increases the amount of data on the disc. Blu-ray Discs offer 3-5 times the storage capacity of a standard recordable DVD and allow the recording and playback of high definition (HD) video content. Verbatim's BD XL Blu-ray Discs include a third storage layer for a storage capacity of 100 GB!

100 euros per 5×100 GB for 1000 years

M-Disc technology is full of promise for long-term preservation; I won't live for 1,000 years, but the data I burned may well last a few centuries at least!
In any case, the burning worked without a hitch, for a price not much higher than the price of classic Blu-rays of the same capacity - 100 euros for 5 x 100 GB discs, long gone are the days of CDs or floppy disks!
Photo, sound and video memories or even final documents, it's worth betting on the future (while continuing to make replications on other less perennial media, as a precaution).
