High-performance 2-drive professional RAID storage system on USB 3.1 ports

Overview

LaCie 2big RAID: for efficient workflows.

LaCie 's 2big RAID is not just an improvement, but a revolution. It's a design that shatters the status quo and sets new standards in versatility and reliability. The LaCie 2big RAID offers you a multitude of ports and slots, hardware RAID 0/1, capacity or data redundancy, and exceptional capacity for archiving. The LaCie 2big RAID features USB-C connectivity and also the unbeatable Thunderbolt 3 technology for sensational performance.

USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 speed for the 4K era

Thanks to USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 technologies, the interface is no longer a performance bottleneck. For the 2big, LaCie has harnessed the exceptional potential of the Thunderbolt 3 interface to achieve the highest possible hard drive speeds. Add to that a controller for hardware RAID and drives running at 7200 RPM, and you get speeds of up to 440 MB/s that optimise file transfers and backups.

IronWolf Pro drives are the mystery ingredient in this next-generation 2big model, making it possible to exceed goals faster and reduce delays. Capable of supporting workloads up to 300TB/year, they are specifically designed for RAID and 7200RPM speeds. Enjoy simplified power management, high capacity and 24/7 reliability.

Versatility for professional environments

With its USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 interfaces, the LaCie 2big gets the best possible speeds on any recent Mac or PC. In addition, USB 3.0 backwards compatibility means the LaCie 2big can be connected to any standard computer. With exFAT support and hardware RAID, it's possible to connect to both a PC and a Mac without losing the RAID configuration. Whatever your workstation, move mountains of data quickly.
Thunderbolt 3 allows up to 6 devices to be daisy-chained to a computer via a single cable (included in the box). This means professionals can daisy-chain up to five LaCie 2big and a 4K display to a single computer, adding capacity, speed, and ease of use. Thunderbolt 3 is also compatible with first-generation Thunderbolt devices and computers and uses exactly the same cables and connectors.

RAID technology for speed or security

In addition to being compatible with any type of computer, hardware RAID provides improved performance and reliability. The different RAID modes available on the LaCie 2big also give you the flexibility to tailor it to your needs. Setting the RAID mode is incredibly easy, and it's impossible to accidentally change it. You can leave it in RAID 0 (FAST) to maximize speed and capacity for certain ongoing projects, then move finished projects into your archive in a snap.

You can also set the LaCie 2big to RAID 1 or mirror (SAFE ) to protect your data in the event of a drive failure. And thanks to its hot-swappable drives, you can easily replace a drive - from the front - without losing any data or interrupting ongoing tasks. Even in RAID 1 mode, its transfer speeds revolutionise backup and make it possible to do it much more often. The LaCie 2big also includes a JBOD mode that allows each drive to be used independently.

    Satisfied

I needed a simple and effective solution to have a DAS and secure my data locally.

I decided on this Lacie system which is simple and reliable.
As for the reliability, we'll see in time.
The simplicity is there. It's very easy to set up a RAID1 to mirror the disks. However, too much simplicity also limits the possibilities. I'm talking of course about the built-in software. The backup settings are extremely limited if you go directly through the Lacie software. Fortunately on MacOS you can get around this with TimeMachine.
As I don't have a built-in equivalent in Windows, I'm trying to work out how to use Freefilessync. I think that in time I'll be able to do something decent but it's a shame not to have worked a bit more on the software at that price...
I'm not sure if I'll be able to do anything right, but it's a shame I didn't work a little harder on it at this price. It's a good idea to turn it off manually because it's tiring in the long run.
I am however satisfied with my purchase.
