The Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe 2X is an atypically shaped tubular lens that offers the possibility of unique macro shots and access to places that are impossible with a traditional lens, even a macro lens. Its integrated LED ring provides even, neutral and focused illumination of the subject. The waterproof barrel end extends the creative possibilities of this lens, which can be placed underwater or in all kinds of liquid. An exceptional lens that can be used in any space that allows the 2cm diameter tube to pass through.
Outstanding features
With 27 elements divided into 19 groups, this lens offers a superior level of resolution. The wide angle of view construction of this lens allows the environment around the subject to be preserved and the depth of field to be excellent given the magnification offered (up to 2:1).
The built-in LED illumination is doubly useful given the narrow maximum aperture of f/14. This helps you to capture a greater depth of field than is usually possible with a conventional macro lens, while maintaining a good level of brightness.
Capture every detail
The 2cm minimum diameter is a great asset for macro photography. In an aquatic environment, in a shallow pond for example, it allows you to photograph wildlife without damaging its habitat. Under a pile of leaves, in a tiny hole, in a burrow or even in a swarm, this lens opens up the field of possibilities for wildlife photography, including capturing nervous subjects.
While conventional macro lenses tend to have longer focal lengths and focus distances to keep you deliberately away from the subject, the Laowa lens is designed to be as close to the action as possible while maintaining a greater depth of field to capture more of the background.
High quality manufacturing
The build quality of this lens? Simply fantastic and, like other Laowa lenses, this one is all metal. Although bulky, it's easy to carry because it weighs just 474 grams, the same as most traditional macro lenses.
The smooth, well-damped focus ring offers a pleasant and precise operation. It is positioned, along with the aperture adjustment ring, far back to maximise the length of the lower barrel section.
