The slightly fake look doesn't inspire much confidence, but it works as expected for the Seagate Momentus Slim 500GB I used it with.
I took this product to recover data from a faulty drive. I was able to recover everything without any problem, the USB 3.0 connection is ideal for fast copying.
The cable provided is really short! (I'm taking off half a star for this detail)
Bought to swap a few 2'5 and 3'5 HDDs easily, nothing to say, it works. The transfer rates are reasonable, but nothing more.
However, the USB cable is ridiculously short (50cm). So I had to buy another cable (I'm allergic to extension cords), and the cost is immediately less interesting.
2 years after buying it, and several uses, from one day to the next it doesn't work anymore. The light comes on but it doesn't read hard drives anymore... I've been using it for a while now, but I've never had it fall out of the box. I think it's mainly the USB 3 connector that is the cause of the problem. Really disappointing.
I had version 2 which did not allow formatting of partitions larger than 2TB under Mac.
With this USB3 version, I formatted my 4TB partitions on an old Mac mini running Sierra in USB2.
Nothing to report, does its job perfectly.
The case is solid and fits perfectly on a desk when a DD is installed. No risk of unbalance (except if you hit it..)
A blue LED on the front of the dock allows you to see if the dock is on and flashes when active. The switch is on the back, maybe not very practical to access it depending on how you arrange the dock but it's only a very trivial detail.
The inner part with the clamshell is made of plastic and the outside is a kind of brushed aluminium.
The data rates are very good. For the moment it works perfectly.
Bought to replace a Chinese USB2 box that had just given up the ghost. This time, I preferred to take a brand rather than having a low cost box that is slowly dying, and therefore having doubts about the data written during the last days of the box. Disappointment : Icy Box doesn't have a USB ID, it's the USB ID of the chip manufacturer that is used ! As for the chinese...
The box is the smallest of my USB docks; it is weighted to avoid falling down if you use heavy 3" disks.
The aluminium finish is nice; it would go well with an aluminium imac for those who like aesthetics. But my desk is nicknamed mordor, so don't think I bought it for that.
Works at the full speed of my 4Tb SATA drive (peaks at 140MB/s), didn't put an SSD in it to see the limits of the case.
The case is small, so the power supply is an external unit with a rather short cable. However, the USB3 cable provided is quite short (like 45 cm), which is a bit convenient for me, but a bit stingy as I imagine some people would have liked more. Fortunately, it's a standard USB3 A/B cable that's easy to change.
First impression: the dock is not that compact.
But in use, the base is quite stable. The USB3 socket on the back of the case is not in micro format, so it's quite robust, which is reassuring. The cable is indeed a bit short. I have not had any problems with the power supply, but my disks are rather economical.
