I'm looking for a projector
Which one should I choose?

Do you dream of being like in the cinema, but comfortably installed in your sofa? Then it's time to fall for a projector: brighter, more suitable to your needs, more "WOW"... Forget everything you know about VPs and finally go for it!

Good to know

1- But can I really put one in my house?

The screen

This is the question that many people ask themselves: no room, no space, no wall, too much light or not enough... In short, take a deep breath, we'll explain everything to you so you can adapt your desires to reality. So YES, you can ;)

I don't have enough space...

Yes, you do. Forget about the old generations that required a large room to show off. Whether you have a large living room or a small space, there will always be a VP that fits perfectly. In fact... just like a big screen TV.

  • Have a large room but no space? Then install your projector on the ceiling or on a coffee table, and prefer mobile screen that can be movable whenever you feel like it!
  • Is your living room the size of a wardrobe? Use a short-throw projector (less than 1) or a ultra-short-throw projector (less than 0.3) projector that can project a few centimetres from its position! Moreover, this type of projector is more compact, brighter and quieter (but more expensive, of course...)

I don't have enough space (bis)...

Have an idea of where to install your VP, but are afraid of being too close? Again, no problem. No more convoluted calculations about where to sit correctly... The only truth: resolution. The higher your resolution, the closer you can look at your (large) screen. So if you have to sit and watch closely to your projection, don't panic and get a 4K UHD that will allow you to watch comfortably. Also, don't choose a projector that's too bright (or not in a dark room) if you're worried about glare.

2- Find the perfect VP

CPU

You may have heard of it before but never understood it: the world of projectors can seem complicated and mysterious when you are not really interested in. DLP, 3LCD, lamps to be changed... So many notions that can make you feel cold before buying. Don't worry, it's not rocket science and no technology is really better than another. It's all a matter of preference and opportunity, depending on your own possibilities and your budget.

  • DLP technology
DLP stands for "Digital Light Processing" and was invented by Texas Instrument. Using a colour wheel, it offers deeper blacks and better contrast, in exchange for a little more noise. The more expensive tri-DLP offers a wheel for all three colours and avoids some of the problems of "rainbow" appearance for some viewers.

  • LCD & Co technology
Less compact than DLP, LCD technology is the same as our TV and smartphones, and offers more natural colours but less contrast. It can be adapted to all sorts of uses: Epson and Sony offer Tri-LCD, which removes the "grid" aspect, with brighter and more consistent colours; there is also LCOS, JVC's D-ILA and Sony's SXRD, which give sublime images, but with less brightness and at a higher price.

3 - What else?

GPU

OK, so technology isn't everything, but you probably have a pretty good idea of what you want. Once you've decided on a direction, here are some other key points that will help you choose THE projector of your dreams. These are simple things, but they will literally change the way you use your projector. Is your room too bright? Would you like no "blur" or are you inflexible about image quality? This is where you have to decide!

  • Aspect ratio:  think about how best to adapt to your use: a 16:9 is ideal for a Home Theater, but a square 4:3 may be simpler for your office use. Don't worry, there is always a possiblity to adapt your screen... With a few black bars on the side.
  • Definition: as mentioned above, the closer you are to your screen, the better the resolution should be. However,  we recommend a minimum of Full HD to be the most suitable for what is being done nowadays. And in all sincerity... It's better to go for 4K UHD if your budget allows it: more content, better adaptation (upscalling), more beautiful images... For longer!

  • Luminosity: expressed in lumens, it allows you to evaluate the intensity of the image in a lit room. Beware, the usual ANSI lumens are sometimes replaced by LED lumens, which appear brighter for the same value. For home use or watching a film, 2000 lumens may be sufficient; but in a brightly lit meeting room, it's better to go for 3000 lumens minimum.

  • Technologies: Speaking of luminosity... Let's talk about lamps! Former black point of the VPs (because yes, they have to be changed...), the possibilities have now greatly evolved: from the less expensive UHP lamp technology which can already reach more than 6000 hours of use without ECO mode, there are now also LED technologies, less noisy but less luminous, which can reach up to 20,000 hours... And finally laser technology, brighter and more contrasted but also more expensive, which go up to more than 30,000 hours! In short, this is not really a problem anymore..

  • Contrast: it is difficult to really know the contrast of your image, as each manufacturer has its own calculation. However, we advise you not to go below 10,000:1 for a deep black and pretty colours.

  • Lens Shift / KeyStone option: these optical and digital corrections are not found on all VPs, but are still very important to avoid image distortion if you want to place your projector really anywhere. They are therefore ideal for a really perfect image adjustment (vertically AND horizontally)!

  • Sound: the sound aspect of your VP is a crucial point. Some technologies are louder (DLP), and the position of your equipment can be more or less close to your ear...  Expressed in decibels, your projector can be considered silent at less than 30 decibels, and discreet at 37 decibels. Above 40 decibels, you are clearly looking at a rather noisy machine!

  • Connection: as for the TVs, you will find the HDMI, DVI, YUV or even S-video connection. You can add more innovative connections such as Miracast technology, Airplay (Apple wireless) or even adding a Chromecast. Classic USB can also be a real plus depending on your use. Beware, if you want to connect a nice sound bar (which is highly recommended for home theater), make sure you find an HDMI ARC in addition to a jack auxiliary.

  • 3D: is no longer in vogue, but is still very much a part of the projector world. It's a little extra that is often available on home theaters, and can be of interest depending on the sources you are watching.

Watch movies on a giant screen!

GPU

There is no need to use too much brightness, unless you also intend to use it in full light... 1500/2000 lumens should be enough. Pay attention to contrast, and go for HDR technology which will only improve it.
If you don't want to be disturbed, add nice screen (the wall will never be perfect...), and sound bar to make you vibrate even more.

Play in XXL!

Once again, add useful accessories to your projector: a screen that you can take out whenever you want, sound for a better immersion... As for the beast itself, prefer a good resolution (yes, even 4K, since upscalling is efficient) and above all the lowest possible Input lag (the time it takes for the signal to be sent between your controller and the display) which will be difficult to know without information. Finally, you can always use a high frequency (you can even find 100 Hz), it won't hurt...

Work efficiently

Projectors have always had a good place in the professional (or educational) world. As rooms are often brightly lit, you may want to go for 4000 lumens, while making some savings on resolution. If you want to share it or take it with you, short-throw nomadic models are great. Even better, you have the mini projectors to take away... along with USB or even SD ports. Finally, there are even interactive interactive VP, allowing you to annotate directly on the screen with a gesture of the stylus!
