Case study...

Setup

This is an "old" PC case with a 3rd generation Intel® Core™ i5, 4 GB of RAM and a 250 GB HDD. 2013... Almost vintage!

Its shape:
medium but of good will :)

We have tested it before optimization to determine the actual benefits of this intervention. The tests are performed under Windows 10.

Diagnosis: Unresponsive, slow to boot, unsuitable for gaming... This PC needs a good makeover! For only a few dozen euros, it is quite possible to transform it into an efficient office tool, whether for home office or classic multimedia use. For this we recommend to add an ultra-fast storage disk (SSD) as well as an additional memory (RAM). For a few extra euros, you can even turn it into a decent gaming station by adding a dedicated graphics card!

Step 1: Add a SSD storage drive

  • There is currently no SSD in the original PC... but now it's time to equip it! The single 250 GB hard drive slows down its start-up and limits its actions.

  • The new SSD will be used to host your current software (Windows, etc), and the long-term storage will be done in the hard disk, already integrated, after having formatted it.

  • After opening the case, we install the SSD in its basket. Connecting its SATA cable, its power supply, then screwing it in.

Step 2: Add a RAM memory

  • The lack of RAM memory unfortunately slows down the PC. 3 RAM slots are still free, and the label of the installed RAM is readable and have to be noted...

  • We add a 4 GB RAM identical to the one already installed thanks to the LDLC Configurator. Its compatibility is necessary for a good functioning of the PC.

  • We install the RAM stick in its slot, please refer to the indications on your motherboard!

Step 3 (optional): Add a dedicated graphics card

  • The old PC has no graphics card and only the integrated graphics processor is used. This is of course sufficient for office use, but not for a gaming station.

  • Adding a graphics card will allow a better display and better use of video games. The increase in graphics options is limited but possible, even at low cost!

  • Insert the graphics card into the dedicated connector on your motherboard. Screw it in, then connect the power pins if necessary.

My computer is too slow! Where to start?

While it might be tempting to go straight to the purchase of a new PC to get rid of your ageing computer, there are already many free tips on how to speed up your PC in just a few clicks, without having to work on the components. If you don't want to invest immediately, you can start by cleaning up your software, optimising your operating system or sorting out your hard drive. As a first step, you can do the following:

  • Disable programs that start automatically at start-up
  • Search for and remove malware with your antivirus software
  • Check that all your software and drivers are up to date
  • Remove any unnecessary programs or files from your hard drive
  • If infected, reset your web browser
  • Clean up any dust with a cleaning spray and a microfiber cloth

After all this, your machine should already be feeling more comfortable. If not, it's time to roll up your sleeves and start upgrading your PC!

Upgrade an older PC for better performance

Do your current needs require a faster computer? So, which components should you change first to speed up your PC?

  • The easiest upgrade is the RAM upgrade. Depending on your motherboard, you can add DDR3 or DDR4 RAM. Adding RAM is useful for all your resource-intensive software or video games as it is needed to store running tasks.
  • Then, we recommend replacing an HDD with an SSD or adding one if your machine doesn't have one at all. As fast as the lightning, this type of drive uses flash memory technology and is ideal for storing your operating system and applications. SSDs are definitely the way to go for a more responsive PC!

Boosting your PC for gaming

It goes without saying that replacing your graphics card will give you an instant boost in terms of display quality. Changing your graphics card also means you'll gain in fps and play at higher resolutions..  Smoother, more immersion, this gain in performance is a real advantage for shooting games and Battle Royale! While the installation is simple, you will need to ensure that the size of your case is adapted to the dimensions of your new graphics card, that your motherboard is compatible and that your power supply is sufficient. The ultimate upgrade: switch to a gaming monitor!
